Val d’Isere pistes available in 3D Map

FATMAP maps used a gird resolution of just two metres to allow for unparalleled 3D viewing of Val d’Isere and Tignes | Ski Olympic News

A new 3D mapping service of Val d’Isere and Tignes has proved a considerable hit since being released late last month, giving skiers and snowboarders the chance to view the resort like never before.

Called FATMAP, it offers an ultra-high resolution 3D mapping application that is accessible on both smartphone and tablet devices. Providing the world’s most detailed images of ski resorts, the innovative technology is revolutionising the way skiers discover the resort during their ski chalet breaks in France.

FATMAP maps use a grid resolution of just two metres to allow for unparalleled 3D viewing of some of the finest ski resorts in the world, and it is this ability that could completely change the way mountain users navigate across resorts.

Two Types of 3D Mapping available

There are two types of maps available: FATMAP piste or FATMAP freeride. The first is tailored for piste lovers and offers information on the best runs, best restaurants and the slopes that get the most hours of direct sunlight. It also allows users to record their stats and tracks so they can create personalised route maps to share on social media.

A premium service, FATMAP freeride is perfect for those who would rather venture off-piste and offers a host of information on popular routes – such as steepness, length and difficulty. Additional details include avalanche risks, crevasse zones and aspect and slope gradients, helping to keep mountain users safe at all times.

As well as documenting the ski areas of Val d’Isere and Tignes, other resorts which have been given the treatment include Zermatt and Chamonix, as well as the Austrian resort of Verbier. As it has already proved hugely popular, it’s likely that those looking forward to skiing holidays in Meribel, Mayrhofen and other leading mountain resorts across Europe can benefit from a similar service in the future.

FATMAP is available to download today from both the App Store and Google Play. While the application itself is free, there is an additional purchase for the map of Val d’Isere or any other resorts.
