Summer skiing in Africa gaining popularity
During our British summer months, there are some skiing experiences possible in the southern hemisphere climes of South America, Australia, and New Zealand. But there is another locale gaining attention as you now have the opportunity to mix skiing and safari in Africa.
With the help of new snowmaking technology, resorts in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa are offering ski holidays during the British summer. Even better, after hitting the slopes for some snowy fun, you can enjoy the sights and excitement of an African safari.
According to the Ski Club of Britain, there are two resorts in the region operating during the summer. Tiffindell and Afriski each offer nearly 2km of pistes and three lifts. At both sites, they cater to beginner skiers with ski instruction, rope tows and easier, flatter runs. At Tiffindell, there are steeper gradients that allow the resort to be officially certified as an FIS giant slalom and slalom course. Since 2014, they have hosted the South African FIS races. The event attracts a global cast of skiers all hoping to enjoy this unique skiing experience.
Here are some great photos of the most recent snows to hit the area boosting the open of the season earlier this month.
Of course, if you are going to visit Africa, make some time for safari. With amazing animal preserves within a day’s drive away, there are some great options. Kruger National Park or sites further north in Botswana and the Okavango Delta are all great options.
Both resorts try to give you the best experiences. Modelled after some of your favourite ski holidays in France – the perfect destination in the winter – these African ski resorts offer all the amenities. There are self-catering chalets, lodges, backpackers’ specials, live music, restaurants, and boast the highest pubs in the country in terms of elevation.
