Mont Blanc subject of world’s biggest photo
The famous snowy peak of Mont Blanc has become the subject of a new innovation in digital photography, captured in what is officially the world’s largest photograph.
Standing at almost 5,000m high, Mont Blanc is the tallest peak in the Alps and among the tallest mountains on Earth. It’s an image which has become synonymous with winter holidays and can be seen in the distance during a ski holiday in Les Arcs and plenty other mountain resorts in France, Italy and Switzerland. It may also be seen from the plane as you travel to your ski chalet holidays in Meribel.
The image, which has been featured in this article published by The Telegraph, is a staggering 365 gigapixels in size and certainly marks a new chapter in the capabilities of digital photography. Providing an incredible panorama of this famous white peak, it was realised through the work of an international team that was led by Italian photographer Filippo Blengini. 70,000 images were used to create the incredible panorama, which were taken after 35 hours of continual shooting by a five-man team. By zooming in on the image, you can see aspects of the mountain in detail like never before.
As large as a football pitch
After the images were taken, it then took a further two months to stitch the images together to create the finishing product. If the image was printed out at 300dpi, it would be as large as a standard football pitch. It snatches the title away from the previous record holder – a 320-gigapixel shot of London that was taken back in 2013. The only image larger is a 681-gigapixel image of the moon, which was taken by the NASA Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
As Mont Blanc is visible for those enjoying a ski holiday in La Rosière and many other French ski chalet resorts, be sure to get up high and capture your own picture on a clear day!
