Meribel lights up for Christmas at annual torchlight ski descent

With only a few days until Christmas, skiing holidaymakers can enjoy all that Meribel has to offer for Christmas | Ski Olympic News

Méribel is all set to the light the way this Christmas, as winter sports enthusiasts prepare to participate in the annual torchlight descent among the resort’s other fun festive activities.

Families venturing out on Christmas Day from their catered chalets in Méribel are in store for a treat, well several actually, as the resort hosts a number of jolly activities and events to help holidaymakers get into the yuletide spirit on the 25th and the days leading up to it.

The traditional Christmas Eve torchlight descent is a must for avid skiers or those enjoying their first ski holiday in France. Gathering just after 5pm on the 24th, ski instructors dressed in red suits to match St. Nicholas himself meet in Méribel Mottaret centre and light up their way down to the Chaudanne area. A second chance to experience this magical sight follows on the 25th, where families can follow Father Christmas himself on parade in his horse-drawn sleigh before the torches are lit again.

Christmas Day will be marked with a spectacular fireworks display before the descent, and spectators can warm up with an array of hot drinks and treats served in Méribel’s centre.

Once visitors have warmed up their vocal chords, they can put their angelic voices to the test at Jack’s Bar where musician Mikey Gray will lead the sing-along at this alternative Christmas carols event. Skiers and snowboarders in the Alps should be advised that while novelty Christmas jumpers aren’t obliged, you’ll certainly look out of place if you neglect to wear your finest knits at this cosy festive-themed tavern night.

Skiers should also be aware that lots of visitors dress up in costume before taking to the slopes on Christmas Day, and it’s not uncommon to ski past an elf or reindeer on the big day.

Méribel is a fantastic place to spend this time of the year, and with so much going on at this favourite skiing resort, you’re sure to find your perfect Christmas within easy reach of the holiday chalet.
