Husky dogs entertain Méribel’s holidaymakers
Ski holiday goers venture out from their catered chalets in Méribel to meet perhaps the cutest residents in all the Three Valleys – the sledding huskies.
The slopes around Méribel may be a little greener than usual this year but no snow is no problem for holidaymakers in the French Alps this season, as the resort provides more than enough entertainment to keep visitors amused while they wait for the white stuff to fall.
Local musher, Karine, has the perfect distraction for families itching to get out on the Alps, namely a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet a group of professional husky dogs in Méribel Valley. Every day this week at 4.30pm, visitors can meet the huskies and ask Karine any questions and even pose for a picture with the friendly canines.
If you’re after something a bit more active, then just one kilometre from Méribel village, visitors can experience a different kind of sleigh ride with dog sledding leaving from Le Plantin and organised by winter activities group Whitetracks.
This traditional form of transport has become a popular pastime in the mountains and the ‘husky safari’ has invited those on ski holidays in France to learn how to drive a team of huskies since 1989.
Guests should be warned, this sleigh ride requires energy and a lot of discipline but with its incredible views of Méribel’s woodland wilderness, there is no other sleigh ride quite like it.
The sessions last an hour and occur three times daily, once in the morning and twice in the afternoon and with limited slope access in recent weeks, this adventure is likely to get booked up quickly.
For holidaymakers waiting to ‘take the piste’ this season, meeting the mountainous pups is a welcome alternative and winter sports enthusiasts can add husky sled driving to their ski repertoire before the expected snowfall in early 2016.
