Effort to boost English skiing through Dry Slope Ambassadors
With a noticeable lack of mountains, English skiers have always had to rely on innovative ways to train and grow their skills.
When you don’t have the chance for an amazing ski holiday in France, or the weather is too warm, finding ways to ski in England can be a challenge. But, there is a system of dry slope venues that help to grow the sport. Useable in most types of weather, these facilities help athletes hone their skills and prepare them for the winter snows in Europe and other ski areas around the world.
To celebrate dry slope facilities in England – and to help motivate and recruit a new generation of English skiers and snowboarders – Snowsport England is launching a new Dry Slope Ambassador programme.
As part of the scheme, Snowsport England have gathered 18 of the nation’s most talented athletes for recognition and hope the group will inspire future skiers.
“These young athletes will not only perform valuable logistical roles at the artificial slopes, they will also act as role models for younger skiers and hopefully inspire them to train hard on their local dry slopes and stay involved in the competitive skiing scene,” said Snowsport England Director Tania Barton.
“Snowsport England has set up this scheme to recognise the achievements of our athletes and to ensure they are part of inspiring the next generation of skiers. They will also play a huge part in growing and sustaining the buzz of UK dry slope skiing and racing.”
The ambassadors, who range from 16 to 21, will tour England and visit various artificial slopes during the summer and winter months. Not only will they compete in a variety of events, they will meet with younger competitors to discuss competitive skiing and snowboarding. Being an ambassador will also allow the athletes a chance to compete for England against competitors from the other Home Nations and hopefully more in the future.
