Biker riders to take over the mountains
Mountain biking is about take over the 3 Vallées with a weekend of trail riding and racing. The event is set to occur on 11-12 July in the Meribel Valley.
Organized by the 3 Vallées resorts, the weekend promises bike riding events for everyone, regardless of age or ability. It takes place near the ski areas of Courchevel, La Tania, Méribel, Brides-les-Bains, Les Menuires and Val Thorens. In the winter, the region is renowned for some the best ski chalets in France.
A “Free Bike” adventure is set to kick the weekend off on Saturday. Riders will have access to 20km downhill riding track from the top of the ski lifts of Courchevel, Brides-les-Bains or Méribel. The track is open to amateurs and professional riders alike. You can take the ride for fun, or test your mettle against the clock with timed segments of 7K and 5.1K.
The 3 Vallées Addict Tour organisers have set the beginning of track on the top of the Saulire at more than 2700m. It ends at the bottom down in Brides les Bains after a vertical drop of 2100m. Riders can take the mountain challenge starting at 9:30 am and the track will stay open until late afternoon. Helmets and back protectors are required to take part. Safety officials are recommending body armour and joint protection as well. The track is only open to riders over 18.
For the little ones, on Saturday, there will be the 3 Vallées Kid events for those aged 7-14. Organisers have various activities planned including cycling workshops, timed descents and lessons on competitive riding.
Also on Saturday, there will be a “Hannibal Race”. It is a relay race for teams of 2-4 people departing. Riders will attack a 2-3km course. Again, under 18s are not allowed in this race.
For the second half of the weekend, there will be “Free Rando Tour”. It involves an 84km ride of varied terrain. The ride is available to those 14 and older, but minors need to be accompanied with an adult. There will be plenty of marshals as the bikes crisscross the mountains. Fueling stations will be provided.
